Research Blog #7: Frame

Academic Concepts:

1) The privatization of stress - Obscuring the definition of stress and making one believe that it is not the environmental factors that are causing the anxiety but rather it is from within one's self.

2) Interpersonal stress- stressful episodes between two or more people that involve quarrels, arguments, negative attitudes or behavior, an uncomfortable atmosphere during a conversation or activity, and concern about hurting others' feelings.

3) Intrapersonal stress- Stress caused by the conflict among family members, colleagues, or peers.

4) Environmental stress- Everyday life is full of stressors that cause minor irritation coming directly from the environment.

5) Medicalization- The process by which human conditions and problems come to be defined and treated as medical conditions, and thus become the subject of medical study, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment.

I plan on using these terms to develop my thesis about the stressors amongst college students that come directly from societal conditions systemically disadvantaging them, especially the poor and the women. When an individual diagnosis themselves with anxiety the common misconception is to seek a doctor or a physician, when instead one should focus more on identifying what is causing the stress and fixing that condition rather than fixing themselves (which may not need fixing to begin with). Medicalizing and Privatizing stress are to very strong concepts that directly correlate to the students suffering from anxiety because rather than helping, corporations focus more on profiting from that individual.
