Research Blog #2: Scouting the Territory

My topic hasn't changed since my first blog post, I still want to evaluate the symptoms of depression that students face in college and what factors within the university directly correlates to these mental issues.

Links:
This article talks about the different types of depression that students face in college and the symptoms:  https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/depression-and-college-students/index.shtml
"What is Causing the College Student Mental Health Crisis :  "https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/theory-knowledge/201402/what-is-causing-the-college-student-mental-health-crisis
I think this article title speaks for itself, this article elaborates more on why students face this crisis and the different pressures in college ; whether it be the system, self esteem, or the emergence of adulthood.
-Some ideas that I got from these articles is that there are way more factors than  I thought I knew in leading to the mental health issue other than affordability and fitting into the college community.

  1. This is a very useful article for helping you think about the possible lenses through which to examine the causes of the student mental health crisis. And it is definitely a crisis -- especially with the spike in anxiety:

It could be that the factors discussed by Armstrong and Hamilton -- especially of social class, but also of difference in general -- are a major contributor, and that privatization is creating the pressure cooker that highlights or exacerbates these social class anxieties for students. Focusing on treatment, and the need for more services on campus for the students affected, is not a sufficient response -- we have to look at causes. The stress that students are facing is not an inside job, it is also due to outside forces. It's due to social problems, not just individual or private problems..
